Update: Karma Sucks

By: Alan | March 21st, 2008

Week 11After managing to steal a point from Pumas last week after trailing 2-0 at the half, Atlas got a taste of their own medicine this week as Tecos managed to score the equalizing goal in the 90th minute in the opening game of week 11 in the Mexican league.

Bruno Marioni put Atlas ahead in the 14th minute, followed by Daniel Achucarro in the 18th minute. There seems to be something to the superstition in football that a 2-0 lead is very unlucky because Atlas saw their lead cut in half by Luis Alonso Sandoval in the 31st minute.

Atlas was able to go into the lockers at the half with a 2-1 lead. Things looked to get back on track as Juan Carlos Medina scored in the 46th minute. Now if you’re an Atlas fan, the next part starts to hurt. The hurt started in the 64th minute as Hugo Droguett placed Tecos within one. Then hope seemed to shine on Atlas when Marcelo Sosa was sent off in the 76th minute following an especially harsh tackle on Marioni.

Then, as if to add salt on an open wound, in the 90th minute, with 10 men, Sebastián González scored the goal that would tie the game and force Atlas to leave “Trez de Marzo” with one point.

The tie means that Atlas could have company in the number two spot in Group 2 of the Mexican tournament if Monterrey and/or Atlante win their week 11 games.

Hopefully Atlas is able to shrug off this result before they meet Maracaibo on the 25th in their Copa Libertadores game.

To be fair, my prediction of a 3-1 victory for Atlas was correct for 18 minutes.

Wow I said “Mexican football is so irregular it will probably be a tie”. I didn’t think it was really going to happen.

Yeah, I’m just hoping that this week doesn’t end with a three way tie for second place.
