Atlas 0 – 0 Tecos: Vargas Can’t Score
By: Alan | March 22nd, 2009
After last week’s dramatic 89th minute penalty win, you’d expect the players to be motivated and ready to take another 3 points from a city rival, but then you’d be disappointed. While Atlas dominated most of the game, they or in particular el Turbo Vargas, were unable to score and managed to let 2 points get away from them against Tecos.
Vargas had an opportunity to strike on an open goal early in the game, but he missed the goal completely. Later in the second half he intercepted a back pass from a sloppy Tecos defense, then managed to avoid the keeper, again only to miss. Lastly towards the end of the game Vargas had a free header in the box that he gingerly headed towards the Tecos keeper, at least he didn’t miss.
Marioni also had an opportunity on goal that didn’t come to fruition. He made a great run, shook the defense, shook the goalie but then couldn’t manage to squeeze it in between both of them into the back of the net. Perhaps more interesting with Marioni is the fact that although he only missed once he was taken out of the game, and depending on where you watched the game you might have been privileged to see the look on his face as he watched the game from the bench.
In the end, it’s not a horrible result. A single point is better than no points at all. Atlas is in 7th place on the overall table which means they’re still in the running for the liguilla but one has to be worried if the forwards on this team are going into a goal drought. Hopefully for next week’s game against Monterrey someone teaches el Turbo how to kick the ball in the goal.
