Atlas 2 – 4 Morelia: Fuzzy Math Time

By: Alan | May 3rd, 2009

Due to concerns over containing the swine flu, Atlas played Morelia in an empty stadium. However, some clever Morelia fans took residence on a nearby hill and were able to pour their support into the stadium. I’m holding myself responsible for Atlas’ loss to Morelia this week, why? Because as soon as I turned on the TV to catch the rest of the game, Morelia scores two quick goals to put the game to bed. I don’t know why I’m cursed this way, but I have just learned to accept it. Atlas gave away two leads and blew a chance to qualify for the liguilla and now goes into the last week of the tournament facing a coupe of scenarios.

Atlas is currently in second place of Group 3 with 21 points, and they are 9th in the overall table. The top two teams from every group qualify for the liguilla, there’s also two spots that go to the top two overall teams that did not come in first or second in their group.

For Atlas to qualify:

  • If Jaguares losses their last game, Atlas advances regardless of how they finish
  • If Jaguares ties, Atlas would advance on a win or a tie
  • If Jaguares wins, Atlas needs to win

Those are all ways that Atlas would qualify as second place team in Group 3. In the event that Atlas does not secure the 2nd place spot in group 3 they can still qualify, however, the series of events that would need to happen for this to come through are so complex my brain is hurting from thinking of the possibility.

But all of that doesn’t have to matter, because Atlas needs only a win to secure their spot in the liguilla. They face Pachuca, a team that’s so in the liguilla they can, and should, rest their starters for this last game.

The Mexican League is too complicated sometimes. You need to be a genius to figure out the qualifying part. For the relegation crap you need to be Einstein.
