Clock Strikes Midnight in Interliga
By: Alan | January 11th, 2009
If you thought the last game was exciting, this one almost left me in the ICU. Down 3-0 at halftime and with a only 10 players Atlas battles all the way back to tie the game at 3-3 and force the game into penalties where Atlas’ clock struck midnight and they were left sitting in a pumpkin…
Atlas almost completed their Cinderella-meets-David fairy tale in Carson, CA today as they played Pachuca in the semifinals of the Interliga. I have to admit that I shut off the game at the half when Atlas was down 3-0 and had just lost a man to a double yellow booking. But like the proverbial trainwreck, I had to come back and I’m glad I did.
Atlas played their hearts out, and managed to tie it all up, with the help of an own goal.In penalties Atlas had 2 chances to go ahead in the count as two Pachuca players missed but Calera kept things all even for Pachuca. Then goalkeeper el Tabla (the board) made a huge stop that set up Atlas for the win and advancement into the Libertadores, but again Calero (which was a common theme) saved Pachuca. In the end it took 13 shots to give Pachuca the edge in penalties 10-9 with Achucarro getting stuffed by Calera and sending Pachuca to the Libertadores.
