Preview: Atlas vs. Colo Colo

By: Alan | April 22nd, 2008

Atlas vs. Colo Colo Atlas will play Colo Colo tonight in what will be the last game of the Copa Libertadores group stages. The last two games of group 3 are very important because the top three teams are fighting for two spots into the next round. Atlas (10), Colo Colo (9), and Boca Juniors (7) are all within 3 points of each other entering the last match day. Boca Juniors will play UA Maracaibo in a game that has all but been won by Boca already. However, a great many things can happen:

  • Atlas loses (won’t) and Boca wins - Colo Colo advance and goal differential determines whether Atlas or Boca would advance
  • Atlas wins and Boca loses - Atlas and Colo Colo would advance
  • Atlas loses (again, won’t) and Boca loses - Atlas and Boca advance
  • Atlas and Boca win - Atlas and Boca advance
  • All teams tie - Atlas and Colo Colo advance
  • Atlas ties, Boca wins - Atlas advance, goal differential determines whether Colo Colo or Boca advance

So as you can see, there is very little chance that Atlas won’t qualify, and in order to be left out of the big dance Atlas would have to lose AND have a lower goal differential than Boca. Atlas currently has a +5 goal differential and Boca has a goal differential of 0, all of this adds to the likelihood that Atlas will be one of teams from group 3 to advance.

Look for Atlas to come into Santiago looking for a win. Coach Brindisi has not said he’s going to sit any of his high profile players like Marioni or Medivil.

My Prediction: Atlas 2 - 2 Colo Colo (for dramatic effect)

I think you are overlooking last year’s situation where Boca found themselves in a similar situation and came out on top. That’s what’s scary, I believe Boca can and will come out on top. I’m not a Boca fan, but in La Bombonera and against the weakest club of the group, things are sort of set up for Boca as well. Should they win 6-0, they are through regardless of the Colo Colo - Atlas result. And a 6-0 result is not something out of this world in this cup or for a team like Boca. Check my blog for more info.
