Preview: Atlas vs Monterrey
By: Alan | July 31st, 2009Tomorrow Atlas will take on Monterrey in their Week 2 game of the Apertura 09. Coach La Volpe led Monterrey before coming to Atlas so he should have insider secrets that could help out the team. Atlas are coming off a 1-0 victory against Pumas while Monterrey tied with Indios in their first game. The game will take place away at the Tecnologico.
The last time Atlas and Monterrey faced each other was week 12 of the Clausura 09 tournament. Historically speaking the teams have faced each other 16 times, with Atlas coming away as the winner only three times. However, Atlas has a +1 goal differential across all games against Monterrey. Atlas hasn’t beaten Monterrey at home since the 2000 winter tournament when they trounced the team 5-2.
I think this game will be very key for Atlas, last tournament they had a horrible showing as visitors and that ended up hurting them towards the end and caused them to miss the liguilla by a frustratingly close margin. Botinelli is recovering from his pre-season injury and is close to 100%, Pacheco is only getting better and it looks like even Danny Boy has some gas left in the tank. The team also gets an edge because La Volpe knows the Monterrey players and can attest to their tendencies on the pitch. If Atlas can beat Monterrey they will not only break their home field unbeaten streak but they will show all of us that they can win as an away team.
Prediction: Atlas 3 – Monterrey 1
