Welcome Home, Now Get on the Bench

Coach Brindisi announced that returning national team players, Jose Hernandez and Hugo Ayala will get no special treatment for having played for the national team in the pre-Olympic qualifiers. Brindisi said he has made it clear from day one that a spot on the Atlas roster is to be earned by your work within the team, and that being called for the national team does not (apparently) get you in the starting lineup.
Upon the arrival of Hernandez and Ayala, Brindisi met with them to evaluate both players physically. Brindisi says both players seem fit and ready to play. However, there was a hint of foreshadowing in the coach’s words indicating that one or both players might not get the start. The coach reiterated that it’s tough to come and play with so little time to rest and prepare, and that he’s also worried about the players’ emotional state of being.
Apparently getting eliminated from Olympic qualifiers wasn’t enough for Ayala and Hernandez, now they might have to ride the bench this Friday, and if Atlas wins against Tecos, coach Brindisi might not want to alter the lineup for the next Copa Libertadores game against UA Maraciabo on the 25th. Looks like Ayala and Hernandez might have a lot of time alone with their thoughts, which may not be a good thing, especially if that thought is “we were eliminated from the Olympic games, and Canada gets to move on…Canada.”
